Florida Regions in Top Four of Most Dangerous Areas for Pedestrians

In Florida, Orlando was recently named the most dangerous area in the U.S. for pedestrians accidents, while the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area was deemed the second most dangerous area in the U.S. for those walking along and across the street.

The group that named the two regions such, Smart Growth America, is a national organization, which has defined its mission as being to advocate for better planning and development of U.S. communities. The statistics are published in a study called Dangerous by Design 2014.

The two most dangerous areas in the U.S. combined have seen in a ten-year period over 1,400 pedestrian deaths and more than 7,000 total traffic fatalities. What may be of even more concern is that the top four communities for such accidents are all in Florida.

The other two, Jacksonville and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, saw, during the same period, 359 and 1,539 pedestrian deaths respectively. Jacksonville had a total of just over 2,000 traffic accident deaths overall and the Miami region more than 6,600.

Driving and Walking Defensively

With so many accidents resulting in injuries in these four areas of Florida, drivers must take control and drive defensively. Pedestrians must be extra cautious not only before and when crossing the street, but, also, when walking along the street.

Excessive speed, reckless behavior, distracted driving, and fatigue are seen as the primary causes of fatalities and serious injuries. All of these behaviors are considered to be grounds for either a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit in Florida.
