Talcum Powder Linked to an Increased Risk of Ovarian Cancer

For several decades medical professionals and scientists have warned about the adverse effects caused by the long-term use of talcum powder on the genital area. In fact, doing this may significantly increase a woman's chance of developing ovarian cancer.

Talcum powder is found in a number of common household products, including Shower to Shower, as well as Johnson's Baby Powder.

These two common products may pose a serious health risk to thousands of women all across the country.

Failure to Warn

According to court documents, the Johnson & Johnson Company has been aware of the possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer since 1992.

Unfortunately, the company decided not to add any type of warning label to their products. In fact, Johnson & Johnson has marketed the talcum powder as an effective and safe feminine hygiene product. It has been advertised as this since as early as the 1900s.

By not warning women about the link between ovarian cancer and talc, J&J put their corporate profits (that are now more than $2 billion annually) ahead of customer safety. In 2016 there were two landmark verdicts that found the company failed to warn women throughout the country about the serious possible health risks related to their talcum powder items. These verdicts included:

  • In February of 2016 a St. Louis jury ordered J&J to pay $72 million in damages to a woman's estate who had died of ovarian cancer resulting from the regular use of talcum powder.
  • In May, of the same year, another St. Louis jury awarded damages of $55 million to a victim in South Dakota who used talcum powder from Johnson & Johnson for years and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

More Damages are Expected to be Assessed

Due to the failure to warn users about the possible health risks associated with using the products, Johnson & Johnson is now facing lawsuits from thousands of women.

In fact, there are currently more than 1,200 lawsuits pending against the company brought about by women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after they regularly used talcum powder. Many of these cases have also been brought about by family members who had a loved one pass away due to this disease.

This is a serious situation and one that is not fully formed. In the near future, there are likely going to be many more claims of injury due to the use of talcum powder from Johnson & Johnson Company.
