Tampa man survives one of the town's bicycle accidents

On what he described as a typical Tampa morning, one man was struck while riding his bike to work. Bicycle accidents are a significant concern in communities throughout Florida. About 10 miles into his daily commute, a vehicle operated by a drunk driver struck the cyclist at about 6:45 a.m. Reportedly, the driver had a blood alcohol content over three times the legal limit. At the time of the crash, the bicycle had both bright and flashing headlights operating, as well as lights on the back of the bike and on the handlebars.

According to a report, the man broke both of his ankles as well as his sacrum. His pelvis was shattered, and approximately 60 percent of his body was covered with road rash. The only part of his flesh that wasn't shredded was the part covered by his spandex cycling suit. First responders did not expect the man to survive the ambulance ride to a nearby hospital.

He was confined to a wheelchair or bed for the first three months after the accident. He pulled ligaments in his legs during physical therapy, which set back his healing, and could not stand for much of the first year. Because he was in such good shape before the accident took place, he was able to eventually work his way to a cane and a walker.

The man eventually got back on a bike again and was awarded Bike/Walk Tampa Bay Cyclist of the Year in June 2017. For those who have been injured in many Florida bicycle accidents, a personal injury lawsuit may be appropriate. Even for someone in the best of shape, the recovery from such an accident is difficult and long term. A personal injury attorney can help an accident victim seek damages from the party or parties deemed responsible for financial damages caused by the accident.
