Bicycle accidents plague Florida school children

Walking or biking to school can be a joy for many children. Unfortunately, not every child in Jacksonville and Tampa have access to a safe route to school, and getting there can put them in danger. One Florida mother recently began tracking the number of pedestrian and bicycle accidents for the children at her local school after courtesy busing to the area was cancelled.

Over the course of three weeks, three different students were injured by cars while traveling either on foot or on bike to school. Despite the high number of students injured in a short period of time, the school district claimed to have no idea of the accidents. A spokesperson from the school district said that they did not personally keep track of these accidents, relying instead upon local law enforcement agencies to keep them informed.

However, local law enforcement agencies also claimed that they do not keep track of the number of children injured on the way to school. Even if they did report all pedestrian and bike accidents to schools, districts do not have a legal obligation to inform parents of these types of injuries when they occur within two miles of the school. Without this important information, many parents remain unaware of just how dangerous it might be for their child to bike or walk to school.

The mother who began tracking accidents close nearby schools believes that this type of information should be tabulated, as it would allow for districts to determine which areas are unsafe to walk in and ensure that busing is available. Until such time, innocent children in Jacksonville and Tampa will remain vulnerable to bicycle accidents on their way to school. Childhood injuries can have physical and emotional implications that last long into adulthood, and personal injury claims pursued on their behalf are usually effective at obtaining necessary and just financial recourse.
