Tampa bicycle accidents: Even worse when hit-and-runs?

Bicycle accidents are bad enough, but a hit-and-run accident involving a cyclist is almost like adding insult to injury. In a city right across the bay from Tampa, just such a hit-and-run bicycle accident occurred recently. Luckily, police believe they may have found the driver who was involved, though the incident is still under investigation.

The accident occurred in St. Petersburg on a recent Saturday night when a 23-year-old college student was cycling against traffic. He was hit by an SUV, described by witnesses as either maroon or red. Apparently, the driver stopped the vehicle briefly after the collision before driving away from the scene, leaving the injured cyclist behind.

The morning following the accident, police received an additional tip and located a vehicle matching the description. The SUV they found had sustained front-end damage consistent with the type of crash from the preceding evening. According to reports, officers interviewed the vehicle owner. Currently, however, the investigation is ongoing and no charges have yet been filed.

The victim in the accident suffered multiple broken bones and has had to undergo a number of surgeries. Though he is expected to survive, he remains in the ICU and has months of recovery ahead. In addition to his pain and suffering and the mounting medical bills, the young man has also had to postpone his upcoming wedding indefinitely. Apart from possible criminal proceedings against the driver, the victim appears to have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit in civil court. In fact, any individuals in the Tampa area or throughout the state who have been seriously injured in bicycle accidents have the right to explore their options for justice and compensation with an experienced attorney.
