When dirt bike 'flash mobs' appear on the roadways

The words "flash mob" may bring up videos on YouTube of a group of people suddenly breaking out in song at a local mall. Those videos often make people smile, and you may be one of them. However, a much more dangerous type of flash mob appears to be gaining popularity on the roadways, and you will more than likely not be pleased to see one.

Groups of dirt bike riders wreak havoc on public roadways across the country. Make no mistake; people have suffered injuries at the hands of these mobs. Police attempt to identify and capture the members of the mobs, but they tend to scatter easily when police arrive. These are not your traditional motorcycle gangs, and you need to exercise caution if you see one on a Florida roadway.

Make observations, but only if it's safe

If you see one of these groups, it would probably not be a good idea to engage them. Instead, call 911. You may take one or more of the following actions:

  • Get off the road when it is safe to do so if it appears that you could be a target.
  • Memorize any identifying information about the riders that you can such as helmet markings or clothing.
  • Make a mental note of the group's direction and speed.

Passengers can help you with these tasks as well. It may be tempting to ask a passenger to video the group with a smart phone, but be careful not to become a target because of this. Relay any information you gather to police. You never know, the information you provide could help keep a mob off the streets, which could make everyone safer.

If you became a target

If you became the target of such a dirt bike mob and suffered injuries as a result, you could face a long and painful recovery. In addition, you could experience anxiety and fear of getting back on the road. The disruption to your life could last for a substantial amount of time during which you may incur financial losses such as medical bills and lost income, among other things.

It may help you to understand your legal rights and options. In addition to any criminal proceedings that may result from the arrest of at least some of those involved, you may be able to pursue compensation through the civil courts. Filing a personal injury claim could help defray your economic losses and provide you with some sense of justice and closure regarding the incident.
